Nunchaku, Tonfa, Sansetsukon and JiKuwa History

The first mention of the Nunchaku can be found in ancient Chinese history, where two pieces of wood tied together by horse hair or piece of straw were used as Horse Brides by mountain soldiers. Nunchaku as a weapon comes originally from Okinawa (Ryukyu Islands) which is part of today's Japan. In 1429, King Sho Hashi united the three parts of Okinawa, creating the Ryukyu Kingdom. To decrease the possibility of a revolt, he declared prohibition to carry weapons and left only with their empty hands. To defend themselves, okinawan citizens and villagers widely practiced Martial arts especially the Kara-te and they used a traditional farm tools where the Nunchaku, the Bo and the Sai were among the farm tools.
Original Nunchaku sticks were curved and became only later the model which is used today with straight handles. The approximate size and weight of the Nunchaku has changed little in the past three centuries, and today it is held by a rope or mental chain, each Nunchaku stick measures between 32 and 36 cms in length and spends 2 and 4 cms in diameter. The official Nunchaku by FINCA (The International Nunchaku Federation) is 35 cm and between 240 to 800 grams. The Nunchaku wasn't a very popular weapon, until Bruce Lee in the 70's came and showed it to the whole world in his movies where he looked like an undefeated killer machine, especially in Game of Death. Nowadays and in any competition or championship, the foam Nunchaku, the helmet and the gloves should be used for safety.
The WANO, World Amateur Nunchaku Organization, was the first legal Nunchaku Federation in the world, and organized the first international competitions in Nunchaku combat and artistic.
In 1988 the FFNS , French Federation of Sporting Nunchaku, was created. But in 1992 and after various problems inside the FFNS Centers, the FFNS and the WANO burst. Raphaël Schmitz, The Champion of the world of Combat Nunchaku several times, decided to take again in hand the discipline. The FINCA, Federation International de Nunchaku de Combat et Artistic, was born by the combination between FFNS and WANO. Then the first World Nunchaku Championship was organized in Altkirch (France), and till today it stills the powerful Nunchaku Federation that ever exist in the whole world, it contains many members around the world, from Europe, Africa, Asia, to America.
TONFA:
This baton like weapon could have developed from a farming tool, as it is very closely related to a grinding device. It appears that the grain was placed on a rounded stone and grinded to powder by circular pressing motions. The Tonfa consists of a piece of hardwood about 50 cm long, and it is found in round and rectangular shapes.
A smaller handle like piece, is found close to one end and sits at 90 degrees, measuring 12 cm. Because of its versatility, it is now used by Police Enforcement officers all over the world, and in the hands of a well trained practitioner again, it is an awesome sight.
Depending on the School, there are about 14 Kata associated with this weapon, and we are teaching four of the katas with one Tonfa and Two katas with double Tonfas, However if you are a Karate player you can easily adapt the kata you know with the Tonfa.
SAN-SETSU-KON:
Sansetsu-Kon is also called Shorin Sansetsu Kon and is also called the three sectional staff, properly called Chinese Shorin Temple Sansetsu Kon, is a historical weapon, which appears in the Chinese book Sangokushi. Its distinctive feature is three 70cm equal sticks connected with lengths of chain or mental rings making it much longer than Bo. It can be swung around, or as a Bo, using one's whole body space to fend off an attacker. This weapon developed at the same time as Nunchaku in China.
It can be use as a short or long weapon, depends on which sections of the staff were held. It has the ability to fold into shorter weapon for close fighting, or it can spring to the length of a regular staff to strike an oncoming attacker, it can be used for blocking by holding the two sections and then attack by the third free section.
This is the only weapon that you have to suffer in order to find a book or a video, a lot of players say I can play with it but they do not know the basic techniques, they can show you only few moves. However, it usually found in a share books with other weapons like Bo and Nunchaku books, but they are rare.
This weapon can be a very danger one if a good player use it, I consider it as a weapon for defense, where the defense is a powerful style to attack, so as a matter of fact we teach our students to not attack first but just wait. FYNT will soon be able to demonstrate with the Sansetsu-Kon in public.
There are a lot of katas for it, and I myself saw about 23-24 katas in different books, movies, and sportive occasions from Europe and USA, and I believe that most of the katas are modern, this weapon suffered a lot in the last thirty years from the claimed Sansetsu-Kon MASTERS. You can demonstrate with the San especially against the Bo and the katana.
JI-KUWA:
(Okinawan hair pins) is a weapon that is easily hidden either in the hair or inside clothing. First I saw Jackie Chan fighting against Double Golden Ji-Kuwas in a very old film and I got amazed with what I saw. First I thought it is a small Tonfa, and I wanted to learn more and more about this game, I searched my country to meet anybody who can teach me it?s techniques, but I think they do not know what a Ji-Kuwa means. I know only few moves and two katas which depends on the lower part of the body, and the only chapter in a very old book I found about this weapon was in Japanese language :), but the photos in the book shows a similarity with Tonfa. However, Ji-Kuwa is used for close distance fighting only according to that book and from what I used to know. what I know.
